Job Responsibilities:
The Risk Manager is the Research Foundation's primary resource in assessing and minimizing risk to the Foundation. The Risk Manager will work to support the Foundation's mission by working with various department staff and groups to address specific and broad risk problems confronting programs. The manager is responsible for reviewing, assessing, administering and monitoring the full range of risk management programs in partnership with CSURMA/AORMA including but not limited to the following areas of responsibility: commercial, property, professional liability, foreign travel, specialty and medical malpractice insurance policies; timely claims submission, investigation, monitoring and settlement; litigation case management; risk prevention policy development, implementation and monitoring; emergency preparedness and response; and emergency incident monitoring and claims coordination.
GENERAL DUTIES: The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent in this position and it is not "all-inclusive". From time to time, the needs of the organization require managers to assume responsibility for new projects, committees and initiatives.
The Risk Manager position will include the following general duties:
Identify and secure all necessary and prudent commercial insurance to manage risk in areas including but not limited to professional liability, property, foreign travel and medical malpractice. Monitor insurance policies to insure adequate coverage and communicate policy coverage to appropriate staff to ensure wide spread knowledge of coverage options and parameters. Provide additional coverage as needed and provide certificates of insurance coverage as requested.
Develop, implement and monitor risk management related policies and training programs including but not limited to defensive driving, DMV Pull, employee Injury and Illness Prevention and emergency preparedness.
Monitor and maintain a thorough and effective environmental health and safety program, in conjunction with SDSU Department of Environmental Health and Safety, that is compliant with all state and federal regulations related to laboratory based research.
Implement, monitor and maintain effective record keeping systems for the full range of risk and legal records and documents.
Report, monitor and complete all claims. Analyze, recommend, implement and monitor policy and procedure revisions to improve loss prevention. Coordinate with claims adjusting staff to effectively investigate and address losses and prevent further loss. Coordinate claims settlement with CSURMA/AORMA.
Identify, develop and implement safety and risk related training programs.
Monitor loss performance in relation to
CSURMA/AORMA.
Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to a four year degree in business administration or related field. Formal course work in risk management, risk control and risk financing is desired.
Five years of progressively responsible
experience as a risk management professional. Successful candidate
must have experience with claims reporting, commercial insurance and
environmental health and safety.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The position of Risk Manager for the Foundation requires a thorough knowledge of risk management principles and tools including commercial insurance programs and environmental health and safety in a laboratory based research facility. Additionally, the position requires an array of competencies beyond the full range of risk management areas of technical expertise. The successful incumbent will demonstrate the technical knowledge and competencies:
Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance
products.
Thorough knowledge of indemnification and hold harmless agreements.
Thorough knowledge of federal and state regulations related to
environmental health and safety within a laboratory based research
facility.
Effective analytical skills necessary to assess complex business
situations and identify appropriate risk mitigation measures.
Effective relationship building skills with managers, supervisors,
employees, principal investigators, SDSU and CSURMA staff.
Effective communication of complex and sensitive information both
orally and in writing.
Effective management of complex issues within and complex
environment.

ARM or CPCU professional designation
